Civil engineers are among the specialists that are most in demand in the United Kingdom according to the detailed list of roles that are in short supply in different areas of the country provided by the UK government. They design and manage construction projects, from bridges and buildings to transport links and sports stadiums.
Recent EngineeringUK research has discovered that demand for engineers is expected to grow by 10 per cent by 2030. The report also revealed that civil engineers enjoyed the highest average salary (£44,992) among information and communications technology (ICT) specialists in general, with a sustainability skill being one of the most often found in-demand skills in engineering job listings.
Although it's possible to work your way towards the role starting as a civil engineering technician, the most common route is via a university or a college course.
We have checked out the latest annual University Guide by the British newspaper Guardian to see which UK universities offer the most satisfaction with the civil engineering degree as well as the best teaching and feedback, student-to-staff ratio, and career prospects after 15 months.
Here are the top 5:
Imperial College London (Guardian's rating of excellence - 100)
University of Bath (Guardian's rating of excellence - 89)
University of Bristol (Guardian's rating of excellence - 87.3)
University of Leeds (Guardian's rating of excellence - 86.9)
University of Southampton (Guardian's rating of excellence - 86.7)
Entry requirements
Civil engineering courses usually require good grades in both maths and physics. Further maths and design technology qualifications aren't obligatory but can be a huge plus. A Level's entry requirements range from CCC to AAA, with the universities and colleges most commonly asking for BBB.
