UCAS New Personal Statement Format for 2026 Entry

Updated: Aug 13

UCAS is set to revolutionise the university application process once again with the introduction of a new personal statement format for students applying in 2026.

Building on a history of enhancing the admissions service, UCAS has consistently worked to create a fairer and more inclusive application process. Recent initiatives such as widening participation questions, structured references, and historical grades on entry data have been instrumental in this journey.

The next step in this evolution is to address the personal statement. Recognising the challenges that the current format can pose, UCAS will introduce a scaffolded structure comprising a series of free text questions. This innovative approach aims to provide clarity for students and improve comparability for universities.

A New Structure for the UCAS New Personal Statement

Starting from the 2026 entry cycle, applicants will encounter a three-section personal statement instead of the traditional single text. UCAS believes this change will create a more equitable platform for all students to showcase their abilities and aspirations.

By providing clear prompts, the new format will guide students through the process, ensuring that they address key areas effectively. This structured approach is designed to reduce anxiety and help students focus on the most relevant information.

Benefits of the New Format

  • Clarity and Focus: The scaffolded questions provide a clear roadmap for students, helping them to structure their thoughts and present their information in a logical manner.

  • Equity and Inclusion: By removing the open-ended nature of the traditional personal statement, the new format aims to level the playing field, giving all students a fair opportunity to shine.

  • Improved Comparability: The structured approach will make it easier for universities to compare applications, allowing for a more consistent and efficient evaluation process.

UCAS is committed to supporting students throughout this transition and will provide comprehensive guidance and resources to help them navigate the new personal statement format.
